Ramblers kicked started their season with a gritty win over Lock at Cummins Oval. Both teams were missing some key players with Covid wreaking havoc amongst Lock’s side, while Ramblers new recruits in Wes and Kingsley Bilney, Brad Dare and Scotty Young were on show for the first time. It was Dare who kick started proceedings kicking a goal with his first kick for his new club, with Ramblers on top all over the ground through Haarsma, Crettenden, Franklin and Kingsley Bilney to hold a 30-point lead after an impressive first quarter. Lock came out a much stronger unit in the second quarter after regrouping and their pressure was causing many turnovers for Ramblers as Travis and Casey Beard got busy to influence the contest. The Roo’s kicked 4 goals for the quarter and kept Ramblers to 2 to get themselves well and truly back in the contest.
The 3rd quarter was another tight one with both sides crashing in hard which was causing skill errors by both teams which would have been frustrating for both coaches. Ethan Langley was showing great maturity across half back setting up his teammates and Jesse Rule was giving them a strong target across half forward. Travis Beard continued to have a strong influence on the game up forward and through the midfield with Lock kicking 3 goals to 1 to see them within 8 points of the home side at 3 quarter time.
The last quarter saw both sides continue to work desperately but it was the pace and class of Kingo Bilney that was proving the difference between the 2 sides. A nice goal from Oscar White gave the Magpies some breathing space as they continued to hold control of the contest eventually running out 18-point winners after a 4 goal to 3 final quarter. Will Haarsma was outstanding for the winners, Mickan was a cool head in the back half, and Bilney, Langley, Rule and youngster Treloar all had solid games. Lock was best served by Travis Beard with 5 goals, Aaron Beard impressive in the ruck, and Siebert, Morton, and Casey Beard all had moments in the game.
