Saturday’s match of the round between Elliston and Cougars proved to be anything but, with the Roosters running out convincing winners by 95 points in a lop-sided contest.
They dominated the game from start to finish and had winners all over the ground with Gibson and Rosalia outstanding up forward booting 11 goals between them to provide a potent offensive attack. The game was hotly contested early, but it was Elliston’s pressure that was causing uncharacteristic errors from Cougars that would have pleased the Roosters coaching staff.
They ramped things up a notch in the second quarter booting 4 goals while keeping Cougars to just 1, to all but put the game to bed by halftime as they led by 6 goals. Their defensive efforts were outstanding, and Williams, Montgomerie and McEvoy were finding plenty of it and Rosalia a livewire up forward. Paech and youngster Henry Turnbull were doing everything they could to keep their side in the contest, but they were being completely outclassed across the ground.
The third quarter was much of the same as Elliston maintained control, but to Cougars credit they were able to stem the flow and keep Elliston to 3 goals despite their dominance. The flood gates finally opened in the final term though as Elliston produced their best footy of the day to pile on a further 7 goals, but more importantly kept Cougars to one solitary point.
They were a class above all day and completely outplayed an undermanned Cougars side who will welcome back some key players in the coming weeks, most noticeably Wagner, Phelps and Hazelgrove to name a few. Jake McEvoy was superb in a best on ground performance, Rosalia outstanding with 6, Gibson a great target with 5 majors, and Williams, Kenny and Montgomerie were all prolific ball winners. Cougars were best served by the ever-reliable Lochie Paech in the middle, Turnbull and Laube were good, and youngster Corey Calderwood showed some good glimpses throughout the day.
